Your English!
The University of
Stirling offers you four options to help you to improve
your English. These range from a long-term, comprehensive
programme to a short course for those who only need a little help.
You will benefit both academically and culturally.

Undergraduate
Certificate
Do
you need a lot of help with your English? This 9-month programme
will help improve both your English and your academic
qualifications, in order to gain acceptance to Stirling.
Who's it
for?
*
Students who need a lot of help with English language skills, and
do not have the required level of academic or English language
qualifications.
*
Students interested in Bachelor degree programmes.
*
Students with an English language level of at least IELTS 5.0 or TOEFL 500 (173
computer-based test), and good High School graduation grades or
equivalent. If you have a lower level, you can take our
Pre-Certificate programme.
How long
does it take?
Nine months (or
four-terms).
What will
I achieve?
Once you
successfully complete the course, you will be guaranteed admission
onto the second year of an undergraduate Bachelor's
degree.
What will
I study?
English language,
Study Skills, and a range of academic subjects based on your chosen
degree.
You'll be assessed regularly throughout the course to check you're
on track. This will involve continuous coursework and specific
assessments at the end of each term or module. You'll also need to
complete a series of extended essays.
Preparation
for the Certificate in English for University
Study
Do
you need just one more IELTS band to gain
admission to Stirling? This 9-week programme is for students who
hold a conditional offer of a place on a Stirling programme but
need to improve their IELTS score by 1
band.
Who's
it for?
Students who
already hold a conditional offer from Stirling, but need to improve
their overall IELTS score (including
individual component scores) by 1 band.
How long
does it take?
Nine
weeks.
What will
I achieve?
After this
course, you'll progress onto the Certificate in English for
University Study and will not need to take another IELTS test for degree admission.
Certificate
in English for University Study
Do
you need only an extra 0.5 of a IELTS
band to gain entry to Stirling? This 10-week course will help you
achieve that.
Who's it
for?
Students who have
received a conditional offer from Stirling, but need some help
meeting the appropriate English language requirements without
retaking the IELTS examination. (In other
words, you need an extra 0.5 of an IELTS
band.)
How long
does it take?
10
weeks.
What will
I achieve?
If
you successfully complete this course, you'll be able to progress
onto your degree programme without having to retake the
IELTS exam. In some cases, we may ask you
to take specific language support classes during your first
semester.

I study?
You'll
improve your English language proficiency and study skills. You'll
practise:

Pre-sessional
English Course
Have you already
met the English Language requirements for entry to Stirling or hold
an unconditional offer from us? This 5-week course will enhance
your excellent English further and give you insight into English
language and study in a University setting.
Who's it
for?
*
Students who are skilled in English Language and have already met
the English language requirements for entry to their degree
programme at Stirling.
*
Students who have an unconditional offer from us.
*
Students who really want to settle in and acquire insight into
linguistic and academic conventions in a UK university
setting.
How long
does it take?
Five
weeks.
What will
I achieve?
Through this
course, you'll enhance your existing English language proficiency
and study skills. You'll practise:
